Copenhagen, the royal capital of Denmark, is one of Europe's oldest capitals. It was a fishing village until the middle of the 12th century, but then grew in importance after being fortified in 1167. Because of its harbor, it soon became a place of commercial importance. Copenhagen has a long history well-integrated with today's modern life. Theaters, museums, art galleries and musical entertainment are among the attractions that make Copenhagen memorable.

  • Castles of North Zealand

The beautiful North Zealand landscape, with seaside panoramas on one side and impressive manor homes on the other, is often called the Danish Riviera. Author Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) once lived here, not far from the setting for Shakespeare's "Hamlet." You will tour one of North Zealand's finest former residences, Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, which now serves as the National Museum of History. It contains Denmark's most important collection of portraits and historical paintings. The castle's chapel houses an organ built in 1610, the world's oldest organ still in use. Later, in the charming village of Fredensborg, you will have an opportunity to photograph the royal family's summer residence. The lavish, Italian Baroque home was built in the early 1700s and is also used for gala dinners in connection with state visits.

  • Royal Highlights of Copenhagen

It's a short drive from the pier to Copenhagen's iconic symbol, the bronze statue of the Little Mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name.

From here, it's a panoramic tour of some of the city's most popular attractions. This includes the Stock Exchange, with its spire formed by entwined dragons' tails; and Nyhavn, a part of the harbor that dates back to the 12th century. • Christiansborg Palace & Tivoli Gardens

Copenhagen, the capital city of the kingdom of Denmark since 1417, has a long history as the Royal city of Denmark, having been associated with a long line of monarchs well before its proclamation as the capital. The location of the city, at the mouth of the Baltic and astride the trade routes between continental Europe and Scandinavia, made it the obvious choice for the Danish monarchs, who at one time reigned over Sweden and Norway as well. Once the city had won royal favor, it attracted a plethora of barons, earls and nobility along with their followers. Traces of the wealth and glamour from those times remain for all to see, in the form of imposing palaces, mansions and churches.

This enjoyable tour will take you to Christiansborg Palace which is the seat of the Danish Parliament. The Palace was built by Bishop Absalon in 1167. Christiansborg is the city’s first fortress and was once the home of the Royal Family. You will visit the Royal Reception rooms, used by the Danish Queen when she receives foreign ambassadors and visiting heads of state. Beautiful tapestries are displayed in the Great Hall. These French tapestries took ten years to weave and were given to the Queen as a gift for her 50th birthday.

Drive through the heart of Copenhagen, seeing the Royal Theatre and Town Hall Square, on your way to world-famous Tivoli Gardens, the fairytale gardens and theme park which opened its gates in 1843. There will be time provided here to stroll through the park and admire the romantic lakes, pavilions, flower decorations and vivid life of the Danes.

Re-joining your coach, you'll travel back to the pier, passing by some more of the city highlights.

Please note: Should Christiansborg Palace be closed, due to official functions or state visits, you will visit Rosenborg Castle instead. Tour involves approximately 90 minutes of moderate walking/standing and a considerable amount of steps to negotiate at the palace (approximately 90). This tour is not available to wheelchair guests and is not recommended for those guests with mobility concerns. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Camera and video photography are not permitted in the palace as well as handbags, camera bags, jackets, umbrellas and/or backpacks. The tour price only includes the entrance fee to Tivoli Gardens and does not include any rides or special attractions. Guests electing to extend their stay at Tivoli will need to find their own transportation back to the ship, at their own expense.

  • A Tour of Two Kingdoms - Denmark to Sweden

This lovely full-day excursion will first take you on a panoramic city tour of Copenhagen where you will get the chance to see such sights as The Little Mermaid, the world famous symbol of Copenhagen; the residence of the Royal Family, Amalienborg Palace; and beautiful Amaliehaven Park, located at the seafront. Traveling on, you'll pass several other of the main highlights found within Copenhagen, including Christiansborg Castle, now home to the Danish Parliament; the Town Hall Square; Tivoli Gardens; the Black Diamond; and the beautiful old Stock Exchange with its Dragon Spire that dates from 1625.

From Copenhagen, you'll drive across the bridge that was built in the year 2000 connecting the two kingdoms of Denmark and Sweden. Arriving in Malmö, you'll embark on a tour of this city's most famous landmarks, beginning with a photo stop at the largest park in Malmö, Pildammsparken, which was laid out in preparation for the Baltic Expo in 1914. The Margareta Pavilion from that time remains standing today. Along your route, you'll also pass by the Theatre of Drama and the City Library. The library consists of two buildings, the old part from 1899 and the new part from 1997. The new building was designed by the well known Danish architect Henning Larsen, who also designed the Copenhagen Opera House. Another photo stop will be made outside the Malmö Castle, the oldest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia dating back to 1436. From the old section of Malmö, you will proceed to a new district of the city, The Western Harbor. This area is home to lovely beach promenades, lush green spaces, fabulous views over Oresund, and the spectacular apartment building, Turning Torso. Rising to a height of approximately 623 feet, this is the tallest building in Sweden. Before leaving Malmö, you will also see the three main squares in the city: Stortorget, Gustav Adolfs Torg and Lilla Torg - the most charming of them all. The Lilla Torg square is filled with colorful outdoor restuarants and cafés and you will be afforded some free time in this delightful setting to have some lunch or shop for souvenirs.

Rejoining your coach, you'll leave Malmö behind and continue on to Lund where a photo stop is scheduled outside what is considered Scandinavia's most distinguished Romanesque-styled cathedral. Next, it's a drive past the University Building and the Astrological Clock before your tour returns to the pier in Copenhagen.

Please note: Although there is a limited amount of walking on this tour, the coach does make several photo stops. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
