The market is one of Latvia's most notable structures from the 20th century and was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Old Riga, in 1998. The main structures of the market are five pavilions constructed by reusing old German Zeppelin hangars and incorporating Neoclassicism and Art Deco styles. The market covers an area equal to approximately five covered football fields and houses more than 3,000 trade stands. During your visit you will also see the market’s red brick warehouses, which are almost 150 years old now. Each of them is based on individual designs by prominent architects well-known and respected in Europe and Russia at the time – Karlis Felsko, Fridrihs Hess, Roberts Pfugs, Reinholds Šmilings, Janis Baumanis. Out of 58 warehouses built between 1864 and 1886 only 13 survive to this day.

Your class will feature classic Latvian dishes such as meatballs in cream gravy and root potato mash, as well as seasonal berries made into a chutney or spring mushrooms for a duxelle tart. The menu will vary with the season and you’ll truly experience ‘farm to table’ cooking in its purest form. Your class will conclude with a delicious lunch that includes items you have just prepared, accompanied by beers from the local artisans of Latvia that were purchased that morning.
