  • Scenic Helsinki Harbor Cruise

    Helsinki harbor is a delightful maze of islands, as you will see on this boat cruise through its beautiful natural surroundings, which are dotted with historical sites.

    As you sail the waters, you will have the opportunity to take in landmarks such as Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress so impressive that it has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built during the Swedish rule of Finland, it spans several small islands. This unique urban archipelago boasts waterfront saunas and many old villas. Keep an eye out for the zoo and giant icebreakers as your guide explains the vibrant history of Helsinki and the city's long-standing relationship with the sea.

    Your harbor tour ends at an open-air market, where you will have time to wander and shop, perhaps sampling some delicious fresh berries or other locally grown produce before it's time to rejoin your coach and travel back to the pier.

    Please note: This tour is mostly panoramic in nature with limited optional walking during free time at the market; however, to enter and exit the tour boat requires negotiating approximately 3-5 narrow steps.   • Walking Tour of Helsinki

    What better way to experience a destination up-close than on foot? This delightful walking tour will give you the opportunity to admire Helsinki's highlights with more detail than would be possible traveling by vehicle.

    It's a short transfer from the pier to the heart of the city, Senate Square. Here, you will see the elegant Lutheran Cathedral where a brief stop is made for photos of the Cathedral and Senate Square. From here, you will continue through the city center towards the Railway Station, another symbol of the Finnish National Romantic architecture. From the Station's perimeter you will have a good view of Helsinki's National Theater and National Gallery. Just a bit further along, you'll stop and enjoy a cup of fresh coffee and a pastry served in one of the many coffee venues found in Helsinki's downtown area.

    Your walking tour resumes as you make your way to Mannerheim Street, Helsinki's main thoroughfare where you will see Helsinki's museum of Contemporary Art, National Museum, the new Music Hall and the House of Parliament among others. Leaving Mannerheim Street behind, you will next arrive at the world famous Rock Church. Built in 1969 this church was built by blasting rocks from inside out and as a final touch it received a copper dome making this a truly unique worldwide place to visit.

    Lastly, you will walk towards Sibelius Park. The name given to the park honors Finland's greatest composer, Jean Sibelius. On the way, you will pass by the rowing Stadium built for the Olympic Games held in Helsinki 1952 and see the beautiful coastline. Arriving at Sibelius Park you will be able to view the monument held in his honor that is composed of approximately 600 steel pipes. Following your time at the park, your transportation will be waiting to transfer you directly back to the ship.

  • Suomenlinna Fortress

    The largest fortification in Finland, Suomenlinna spans several small islands in Helsinki harbor, and it's just a short ferry ride away from the pier. Built during the Swedish rule of Finland to protect the country against invasion from Russia, the 18th century fortress is so impressive that it has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During your walking tour through the grounds, you will soon realize that Suomenlinna is more than a fortress: the complex is really a city within the city of Helsinki, boasting its own library, health center, fire brigade and school. After the formal tour, feel free to explore the surrounding parks, graceful buildings and beaches.

  • Art and Architecture Highlights

    Helsinki is an architectural delight, where many fine and impressive buildings, designed by eminent Finnish architects, wide streets and graceful squares. With an open and spacious feel, the city is in complete harmony with the surrounding countryside. This tour provides an introduction to Finland's charming rural landscapes as you visit Hvittrask, once home to three of Finland's leading architects whose work can also be admired during a panoramic tour of the city.

    From the pier depart along the coastal road passing the city center towards Hvitträsk. In the heart of the surrounding countryside, amidst a magnificent backdrop of deep forests, majestic rocks and crystal clear waters, you visit Hvittrask. The former home of famous Finnish architects Eliel Saarinen, Armas Lindgren and Herman Gesellius, built in 1902 of natural stone and logs on a hill overlooking a lake, it is an outstanding example of Finnish residential architecture. Hvitträsk is also the birthplace of Eliel's son Eero Saarinen, his best-known architectural works are the Arch of St. Louise, the TWA terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport as well as the Dulles Airport in Washington, and of course the plastic tulip armchair.

    After a tour of Saarinen's magnificent home, now an exhibition center for Finnish art and handicrafts, you can enjoy the peace and tranquility of its delightful grounds. Your tour then continues to Tarvaspaa, the former home and studio of Finland's national painter, Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Located in a charming park at the edge of the sea, the house was built around 1912 and designed by the artist himself. Gallen-Kallela's works and the story of his colorful life are on display here, together with exhibits by other famous artists depicting the Finnish way of life. After complimentary refreshments, you return for a panoramic tour of the capital with its unique charm and elegance created by Finland's most celebrated architects.

  • Helsinki By Sea and Fortress Island

    Experience Helsinki's beautiful archipelago from the sea during this boat tour through the islands outside the Finnish capital.

    Depart the pier for the drive to the Market Square, where you will embark for a guided cruise around Helsinki. With 180,000 islands, Finland is one of the world's largest archipelagos.

    During your floating tour, you will pass some canals, and have a unique opportunity to observe typical suburb life in Finland. You will see unique urban waterfronts, old villas and giant icebreakers while learning about Helsinki's interesting legacy. Along the way, a stop will be made on the Suomenlinna fortification islands for a guided walking tour and free time.

    Suomenlinna Island is a major monument of military architecture, and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction of the sea fortress on these islands just off Helsinki in the mid-18th-century was the most extensive building project during Swedish rule. Upon completion, its military shipyard was one of the world's biggest dry-docks. By the end of Swedish rule, it was compared to the maritime fortifications at Gibraltar. The 250-year-old fortress, which has been preserved intact due to its military past, is included as part of Suomenlinna Island's World Heritage status.

    Following your walking tour of the island you will return to the Market Square, via public ferry, where the tour ends. Time permitting, you can explore the city's center on your own, or take a shuttle coach back to the pier and ship.

    Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking on the island, and over uneven gravel surfaces at the fortress. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilize a wheelchair.

  • Picturesque Porvoo

    On the way to Porvoo, you will drive through Helsinki, past the bustling open-air market and several grand works of architecture, including the Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, and expansive Senate Square in the heart of the city.

    At Senate Square, you will stop briefly to see the Lutheran Cathedral, which was called St. Nicholas' Church (in honor of Tsar Nicholas I) until Finland became independent from Russia in 1917. Other marquee attractions along the way include the New Opera House, Finlandia Hall, the National Museum, the imposing Parliament building, and the Contemporary Art Museum.

    Once in Porvoo, you will begin a leisurely walking tour. A sense of history pervades the entire town, as Porvoo is the second oldest in Finland, receiving its charter in 1346 from the Swedish king, Magnus Eriksson. See the medieval cathedral where Tsar Alexander I convened the Diet (a legislative body) of Porvoo in 1809 and proclaimed Finland a Russian Grand Duchy. Stroll through the picturesque cobblestone streets lined with brightly painted wooden buildings. Stop at the Old Bridge of Porvoo, which spans the Porvoo River, for a magnificent view of the old town. Then, enjoy time on your own, perhaps admiring the impressive gardens and browsing through the handicraft shops and antique stores.

  • Chef Market Tour & Nordic Cooking Class

    Together with your Chef from The Culinary Arts Kitchen, browse Helsinki's oldest food market and shop for produce, fish and Nordic ingredients for your hands-on cooking class. Enjoy tasting some local specialties at the market and take in the sights on a brief panoramic tour through the city and along the seaside.

    Begin your day by meeting your Chef in The Culinary Arts Kitchen for an overview of the trendy new Nordic Cuisine and today’s tour. You and a partner will be given a shopping assignment and a market bag to collect your ingredients for our luncheon and hands-on cooking class later today. The class and tour are limited to twenty two guests, so you’ll be able to interact with your Chef in this tour designed to give enthusiasts a chance to experience the local food scene like only a small group can.

    Together with your Culinary Arts Kitchen Chef, you'll depart from the pier for a brief but scenic drive through Helsinki, to the lively Kauppahallo (covered) and Kauppatori (open) markets. Inside the covered market you will find cured moose meats, reindeer sausage, cured fish and the savory Lapland cheeses. You'll stop at some of our chefs' favorite stalls and sample Finnish treasures like smoked salmon and salted licorice. In the open market square, the stalls are overflowing with seasonal berries and vegetables, so you'll stop and sample 'what's growing' this week.

    After becoming oriented to the market, you'll set out with your partner to gather the ingredients on your shopping list. You'll also have some free time to stroll the markets as well, finding the perfect Cloudberry jam to take home or snack on some fresh grilled salmon from a charming street vendor. Or you can simply watch the local Finns shop for tonight's meal from one of the picnic tables in the market square.

    Following your morning in the market, you’ll relax for a brief panoramic bus ride around the small city of Helsinki. If time permits, your Chef will take you to another market, Hakaniemi, where the local chefs shop.

    Returning to the ship, you'll re-group in The Culinary Arts Kitchen for a private cooking class. During that time, you'll use the ingredients you purchased earlier and sample several seasonal or specialty items purchased at the markets by your Chef. You will learn how to make salmon gravlax - the cornerstone of Nordic cuisine. You'll also partake in a tasting of Findlandia vodka in a local drink such as salmaikkikossu (with salted licorice) or fisu, with Fisherman's Friend pastilles. It’s a festive lunch celebrating your ‘living like a local’ in Helsinki with lots of food and drink and fun!

There may be some uneven surfaces and steps to negotiate.   • Highlights of Helsinki

    This panoramic driving tour provides the definitive overall view of Finland's capital. It starts at the harbor and follows a coastal road past Embassy Park, an open-air market, and expansive Senate Square, dominated by an elegant Lutheran Cathedral. (Its steep steps are where director Warren Beatty shot scenes for his film "Reds," substituting Helsinki for St. Petersburg.)

    Your drive then continues down the chic Esplanadi, a boulevard lined with designer shops, and along Mannerheim Street, Helsinki's main thoroughfare. Its landmarks include the imposing Parliament Building, the National Museum, and Finlandia Hall, a concert hall designed by renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Further along, you will see the stadium that hosted the 1952 Olympics, the new Opera House on Töölönlahti Bay, and the highly unusual Rock Church, an underground house of worship blasted out of native granite and capped with a copper dome.

    Lastly, at Sibelius Park, you will stop at the amazing, stainless steel tube monument to the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. At the end of the tour, you may return to ship or remain downtown to explore on your own.

    Please note: This tour is mostly panoramic with optional walking at the stops. It is a 10-minute walk in each direction from the coach to the Rock Church;however, guests may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in this portion of the tour. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain.

  • Beautiful Haikko Manor, Nordic Walk & Sauna

    This very special tour leaves Helsinki behind and travels to the beautiful Haikko Manor and Sauna.

    The history of Haikko Manor dates back to 1362 when it was owned by a Dominican Monastery of Vyborg (Russia). Its fascinating past has not surprisingly, been linked with royal and imperial splendor. During the Russian rule at the turn of the century, several members of the Russian imperial family would visit Haikko during the summers. Purchased by the Vuoristo family in 1965, Haikko was converted into a hotel in 1966. Today, it consists of three major areas: the Manor, the Spa and the Congress Center.

    During your time at Haikko Manor, you'll have a wonderful opportunity to experience the uniqueness of the Finnish national sport of Nordic walking. Conducted within the surrounding environs of the beautiful park and accompanied by an instructor, you may choose an easy Nordic walk or one with more strenuous activity, such as walking a hill. After your exhilarating walk, you can relax in the traditional cottage sauna by the sea, or stroll around the lovely grounds.

    Upon your return to Helsinki you will make a short visit to the unique Rock Church, a thrilling work of modern architecture in Helsinki. Completed in 1969, it is built entirely underground and has a ceiling made of copper wire. There will be a 15 minute walk each way to the Rock Church from the coach parking lot. We will then make a photo stop at the Senate Square where you can remain shopping and return to the ship under your own arrangements if you wish to stay in downtown Helsinki .

    Following your visit, you will then return back to the ship.

    Please note: The Nordic walking portion of the tour covers approximately 1 mile and the Nordic hill climb is approximately 500 feet. Those guests who wish to use the sauna should bring along a swimsuit. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The Rock Church may be closed during religious services, therefore visit inside the church is not guaranteed. Due to new traffic restrictions, guests will have a 10-minute walk each way to reach the Rock Church.
