Ports and Excursions of Northern Europe

Copenhagen, Denmark-port
  • Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen, the royal capital of Denmark, is one of Europe's oldest capitals. It was a fishing village until the middle of the 12th century, but then grew in importance after being fortified in 1167. Because of its harbor, it soon became a place of commercial importance. Copenhagen has a long history well-integrated with today's modern life. Theaters, museums, art galleries and musical entertainment are among the attractions that make Copenhagen memorable.

A Tour of Two Kingdoms - Denmark to Sweden

Light Activity /Walking

Duration: 7 hours

Tour Code: CPH-007

This lovely full-day excursion will first take you on a panoramic city tour of Copenhagen where you will get the chance to see such sights as The Little Mermaid, the world famous symbol of Copenhagen; the residence of the Royal Family, Amalienborg Palace; and beautiful Amaliehaven Park, located at the seafront. Traveling on, you'll pass several other of the main highlights found within Copenhagen, including Christiansborg Castle, now home to the Danish Parliament; the Town Hall Square; Tivoli Gardens; the Black Diamond; and the beautiful old Stock Exchange with its Dragon Spire that dates from 1625.

From Copenhagen, you'll drive across the bridge that was built in the year 2000 connecting the two kingdoms of Denmark and Sweden. Arriving in Malmö, you'll embark on a tour of this city's most famous landmarks, beginning with a photo stop at the largest park in Malmö, Pildammsparken, which was laid out in preparation for the Baltic Expo in 1914. The Margareta Pavilion from that time remains standing today. Along your route, you'll also pass by the Theatre of Drama and the City Library. The library consists of two buildings, the old part from 1899 and the new part from 1997. The new building was designed by the well known Danish architect Henning Larsen, who also designed the Copenhagen Opera House. Another photo stop will be made outside the Malmö Castle, the oldest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia dating back to 1436. From the old section of Malmö, you will proceed to a new district of the city, The Western Harbor. This area is home to lovely beach promenades, lush green spaces, fabulous views over Oresund, and the spectacular apartment building, Turning Torso. Rising to a height of approximately 623 feet, this is the tallest building in Sweden. Before leaving Malmö, you will also see the three main squares in the city: Stortorget, Gustav Adolfs Torg and Lilla Torg - the most charming of them all. The Lilla Torg square is filled with colorful outdoor restuarants and cafés and you will be afforded some free time in this delightful setting to have some lunch or shop for souvenirs.

Rejoining your coach, you'll leave Malmö behind and continue on to Lund where a photo stop is scheduled outside what is considered Scandinavia's most distinguished Romanesque-styled cathedral. Next, it's a drive past the University Building and the Astrological Clock before your tour returns to the pier in Copenhagen.

Please note: Although there is a limited amount of walking on this tour, the coach does make several photo stops. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
