Ports and Excursions of Northern Europe

Sochi, Russia-port

Sochi, situated just north of the southern Russian border, was established as a fashionable resort area under Joseph Stalin. Stalin’s study, complete with a wax statue of the leader, is now open to the public. The city sprawls along the shores of the Black Sea against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains, and at 90 miles, is claimed to be the longest city in Europe. The city has been selected to host the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014.

Agura Waterfalls

Light Activity /Walking

Duration: 4 hours

Tour Code: SOC-006

Relax in the sylvan setting of Agura waterfalls on a leisurely hike through Sochi National Park and then enjoy some refreshments at a nearby restaurant.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive through Sochi, a resort city flanked by the Black Sea and the perpetually snow-capped Caucasus Mountains. The surrounding countryside offers a wonderful setting full of natural beauty, especially as you venture deeper into the mountains in the Sochi National Park.

Before long, you will arrive at Agura Canyon, created by the Agura River. Setting off from the trailhead, you’ll begin your trek through a forest of towering beech trees, sycamores and lindens. As you follow the beautiful Agura River, the natural sights and sounds of the cascading water should be immensely soothing. In time, you will come upon a picture-perfect waterfall that roars through a tight gorge.

The water in this first waterfall (two others lie farther upstream) drops about 100 feet into a spectacular mountain pool and eventually makes it way to the Black Sea. During free time at the lower Agura waterfall, you might wander about the shore or simply sit on one of the massive boulders and soak in the atmosphere. This area nurtures a variety of flora such as pink rhododendrons and azaleas, which may be in bloom. You may also spot a roe deer bounding through the forest.

Later, you will retrace your steps to the trailhead, and then drive to a nearby restaurant for some refreshments. Your drive back to the pier takes you along the Kurortny prospect where you’ll be able to view some of Sochi’s most popular sights.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 60-minutes of moderate walking, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. There will be some uneven and stony natural surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking or hiking shoes are recommended.
