Museum of Reconstructions

Seated Tour

Duration: 2 hours

Tour Code: HFT-002

Gain a thorough understanding of the history of Hammerfest during this tour that visits the Museum of Reconstruction.

Your tour commences with a scenic coach drive through the streets of Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world. Also known as the Hiroshima of Europe, Hammerfest was reconstructed after World War II, when the town was completely destroyed by fire during the withdrawal of the German troops in Finnmark County. Sadly, only the tiny chapel in the graveyard remained.

Adjacent to the Hammerfest Church resides the newly erected Museum of Reconstruction, where you will enjoy an inside visit. This inspirational Museum aims to show human determination to conquer and overcome the destruction created by war and create a new future. The exhibitions give visitors an inside look at the life and culture in the Finnmark County before the war, the refugee existence and the optimism that characterized the reconstruction years after the war.

Following your visit to the Museum, you will rejoin your coach for a short ride towards Salen where you will be treated with views towards the town and surrounding islands. If you're lucky, you may observe herds of reindeer, the domestic animals of the Sami people. From here, you will transfer back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 45-minutes of easy walking. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, can make their own way on and off the coach and have a companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
