Visit two villages nestled in the foothills of venerable Mount Olympus, survey excavated ruins and explore an archaeological museum on this enlightening tour. After traveling through idyllic countryside, you’ll arrive at the village of Litochoro, which lies in the shadow of Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and legendary home of the Greek gods. Stroll the narrow streets, spotting locals shopping in open-air markets, climbers preparing to conquer the mountain and townspeople simply enjoying the rustic atmosphere. In nearby Dion, view unearthed ruins of ancient Greek theaters, Roman baths and elaborate mosaic-floored villas that attest to the village’s importance when it controlled the narrow pass leading from Macedonia to Thessaly. Learn it was here that Alexander the Great made sacrificial offerings to bless his forthcoming eastern adventures and where ancient Macedonians worshipped the Olympian gods in sacred places such as the Sanctuary of Zeus.
