  • St Malo Walking Tour & Castelbrac Lunch

Join your host and Chef in The Culinary Arts Kitchen for an orientation to St Malo, the cuisine of northern France and the schedule for the day.

A tender ride from the ship brings you to the picturesque city walls of St Malo, where you will board your coach and make the 45 minute drive to the restaurant Castelbrac, located on Prieuré Bay where commander Charcot himself paced, dreaming of his future expeditions. Committed to highlighting the land and the high quality of local products, Chef Julien Hennote - recipient of the prized Escoffier trophy and a young ‘wonder chef’ in the region who relies on local products to produce his gourmet dishes, will prepare a special meal for you. Chef Hennote works only with the best local producers and looks to the ocean for his inspired cuisine as: "we practically have our feet in the water”. While the menu will be seasonal, examples of the ‘house favorites’ include local specialties such as: scallops tart, Foie gras, fresh-foraged mushroom custard, abalone with black garlic and John Dory. And of course, in France the desserts are always sure to please. Your lunch will also include a sampling of matching wines. Relax and take in the fantastic sea views while enjoying a wonderful degustation menu.

At the conclusion of your delicious lunch, you’ll re-board your coach and drive back to St. Malo where you will commence a guided walking tour of the old city. What better way to walk off your delicious lunch! While Saint-Malo was founded by the Welsh monk, St. Maclou, it was also once a haven for pirates and an important port in the voyages of discovery. Cartier sailed from here to Canada in 1534. Soon after, Saint Malo began to flourish as a trading port, not only because of the furs sent back from the New World, but also because of cod fishing. As ship owners grew wealthy, they built beautiful homes in town, first of timber and then, increasingly, of granite. As the town grew in importance, high ramparts were built to ensure security. During your walk through the city, a stop will be made to sample the famed ‘galette’ - a buckwheat crepe with ham, egg and cheese – something not to be missed!

Following your walking tour you will have the choice of catching a tender directly back to the ship, or time permitting, you may elect to stay ashore and further explore on your own.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90 minutes of moderate guided walking, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. There will be stairs, uneven and cobblestone surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with walking difficulties. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable closed-toe shoes are recommended. Public restrooms in St. Malo may require a usage fee.

  • St. Malo & Montmarin

Saint-Malo was named for the 6th century monk who converted the locals to Christianity. Once a haven for pirates, it was also an important port in the voyages of discovery. Cartier sailed from here to Canada in 1534. Soon after, Saint-Malo began to flourish as a trading port, not only in the furs sent back from the New World, but also due to cod fishing. As ship owners grew wealthy, they built beautiful homes in town, first of timber and then, increasingly, of granite. As the town grew in importance, high ramparts were built to ensure security. This is the part of the city we will explore during our guided walking tour. Continue with a scenic drive to Montmarin to visit a traditional garden of a ""Malouinière"" built in 1760 (a Malouinière is a typical summer residence of rich ship owners and merchants from Saint Malo), a noteworthy estate on the banks of the Rance river. In front of the house, the French formal garden, unchanged since the day it was designed overlooks the English-style portion of the garden, laid out in 1885, with its historic trees, wide lawns, thickets, rock garden and flowering borders. After the visit (gardens only), drive back to Saint Malo.

Please note: this tour involves 2 hours of walking, sometimes over uneven grounds or cobblestones, and it is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Caps and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Mystical Mont St. Michel

Begin with a scenic ride through the countryside of Brittany. The unforgettable view of the abbey of St. Michel will rise in the distance in sharp contrast to the coastal tidal plain which surrounds it. The abbey is a magnificent edifice comprised of a pre-Romanesque church begun in the 8th century and a series of Romanesque and Gothic monastery buildings. Rising over 500 feet above sea level, Mont St. Michel rests on sand banks where the daily tides can change as much as 4 to 6 feet. At high tide, this wondrous abbey and church often seem to be floating in the sea. A walk up the steep, narrow cobblestone streets and steps brings you to the abbey where your guide will take you to explore maze-like passages and stairways. After visiting this marvel of medieval construction, enjoy some free time before transferring back to the ship.
