  • Marsala Wines and the Salt Pans

Marsala comes from the Arab name, "Marsa Allah" (port of Allah) or "Marsa Ali" ("port of Ali)" which means, "great port". In the Arabian language, Ali is synonymous with "great" and the ancient harbor of Lilybaeum was indeed massive. This noteworthy harbor is connected to the history of modern Italy as it is here that Garibaldi landed with his one thousand people in 1860. Rich with Carthaginian, Roman, Norman, Arab and Spanish monuments, Marsala is the location of the ancient Lilybaeon, founded in the 3rd century BC by the Phoenicians that left Mothia after its destruction at the hands of Dionysus.

Starting off from the pier, it's a scenic 45-minute coach ride to Marsala where you will first experience a drive through the historical city center that begins at the Porta Garibaldi gate. Here, in Marsala's main square or "Piazza Republica", it's possible to admire the Palazzo Senatorio which dates to the 17th century, and the Cathedral that is dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury. The Cathedral was constructed in the 17th century as well, over what was once a Norman building and houses some important works of artist Antonello Gagini. Your visit of the city center will conclude at the town's other gate, Porta Nuova.

The tour continues from here to the museum "Baglio Anselmi", an old wine cellar that today, preserves part of a 3rd century B.C. Carthaginian war ship that was found near the coast of the Stagnone. This is the only ship of its kind that still exists today and the incredible remains hold great importance as they allow us to understand the particular construction techniques that were used by the Carthaginians.

Following your time in the Museum, you will proceed to the winery. During your visit you will learn about the production of the famous wine "Marsala", which was casually discovered in 1771. The English were the first ones to produce this wine and built wineries in Marsala from which they exported the wine to locations around the world, competing with Port and Sherry wines. Before leaving the winery, you will be treated to a delicious lunch of typical Sicilian dishes as you relax in this decidedly Sicilian atmosphere. During lunch, you will also have the opportunity to taste 4 varieties of local wine.

After lunch, you will re-join your coach and travel to the fascinating salt pans that are situated between Marsala and Trapani. The Phoenicians were the first to understand the extremely favorable natural conditions that existed here for the extraction of salt. Today, the area has been declared a Natural Reserve by the World Wildlife Federation Fund. Due to the unique flora and fauna that grows here, the landscape is full of varied and vibrant colors. During a photo stop, you will have a chance to view the reconstructed ancient wind millstone that was used for the production of salt.

From here, a leisurely drive carries you back to the pier and your waiting ship.

Please note: This tour includes several hours of moderate walking/standing - at times on uneven ground. The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Comfortable clothing; sun caps; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.

  • The Segesta Archaeological Site

Departing Trapani by coach, you will embark on a relaxing 1-hour drive through rolling green hills to the abandoned ancient city of Segesta. As you arrive, you are greeted by the magnificent ruins of Segesta's glorious Doric Temple. Standing alone on a hilltop, the Temple rises above the pristine beauty of the tranquil Sicilian countryside, creating an unforgettable vision for visitors. Considered to be one of the best-preserved archaeological sites to be found anywhere, its idyllic location truly sets it apart from other historical sites. As your knowledgeable guide shares with you the history of this forgotten city, you'll be treated to amazing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and peaceful valleys that are spread out before you. Following your orientation of the site, you are free to do some exploring on your own and discover how Segesta reflects the presence of several ancient civilizations, beginning with the elusive Elymians.

While visitors are naturally drawn to the impressive Doric Temple, it is just one of the highlights of this archaeological park. The theater which rises on top of a hill overlooking the Castellamare Gulf, is also a breath-taking site to see and the path that leads to the theater is bordered by remains of this once thriving ancient city. Recent excavations have unearthed a Muslim necropolis and a mosque dating from the 12 century that is actually situated next to the site of a Norman castle. Evidence suggests that the mosque was destroyed after the arrival of a new Christian overlord at the beginning of the 13th century and Segesta seems to have finally been abandoned toward the second half of the 13th century. While much of the history of this mesmerizing city that once controlled several major roads between the coast to the north and the hinterland is unknown, it still captures the attention of visitors today by providing an unforgettable glimpse of what once was. Following a memorable 2-hour visit, you will re-board your coach for the return trip to the pier in Trapani.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking/standing, mainly at the guest's discretion. There is an uphill climb to reach some of the sites and there are natural and uneven surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns. A light sweater or jacket; sun caps; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.

  • Marsala Wines and Mothia

Mothia, or the Island of San Pantaleo, together with two other small islands, is located in the center of the "Stagnone" the most important and biggest lagoon in Sicily. Founded by the Phoenicians, Mothia was extremely powerful until its destruction in 397 B.C. at the hands of Dionysius. Its geographical position is similar to that of many other Phoenician settlements: a small island near the coast, surrounded by shallow water, making it easy to defend and a safe anchorage for their ships.

It's a 30-minute coach transfer from the pier to the embarcadero where you will board your touring boat for the trip to Mothia. Arriving, you will commence a guided walking tour that visits the museum founded by Joseph Whitaker at the beginning of the 20th century. Remains from Mothia, Birgi and Lilibeo (Marsala today) are on display here. The collection of artifacts includes bowls, glasses, objects with metal decorations, pieces of ceramics, weapons, jewels and the 5th century B.C. marble statue of the Young Boy of Mothia ("Giovinetto di Mozia"). Your time in Mothia will also include a visit to the House of Mosaics and city gates.

Leaving Mothia, you will next travel to Marsala where you will participate in a winery tour and be treated to a tasting of Sicily's most famous wine: "Marsala". During your time here, you will learn about the production of wine and can view the oak barrels where the wine is carefully aged.

Following your time at the winery, you will venture into the city of Marsala for a panoramic tour of the town. Marsala is derived from the Arab name, "Marsa Allah" (port of Allah) or "Marsa Ali" ("port of Ali)" which means, "great port". In the Arabian language, Ali is synonymous with "great" and the ancient harbor of Lilybaeum was indeed, massive. When your tour of Marsala is completed, you can relax and enjoy the drive back to the pier and your waiting ship.

The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability.
