With dramatic views of classic whitewashed houses clinging perilously to the side of the caldera and stunning beaches of white and red sand or black pebbles, it’s no wonder this may be the most photographed scenery in the world. Visit Ancient Akrotiri, the archeological site of a town frozen in time by ash from an eruption 3,600 years ago. Also worth a day trip is the Volcano of Santorini Palea (old) Kameni and Nea (new) Kameni , two small islands of black lava positioned in the centre of the basin of Santorini.

  • Santorini Wines At Venetsanos Winery

Visit three of the island’s most exceptional wineries to sample their signature wines, many of which will be thoughtfully paired with delectable local products.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at Venetsanos, the first of three exceptional wineries that you will visit on Santorini. The volcanic composition of the island’s soil, scant rainfall and strong winds contribute to the terroir that lends Santorini’s wines unique characteristics that you will surely notice during the tasting at each of the wineries.

After touring the family-owned Venetsanos winery, which overlooks the spectacular Santorini caldera, you will sample three premier wines in the cellar. The selections may include a dry white made from the island’s flagship Assyrtiko grape, a red with fruit aromas produced entirely from Mandilaria grapes, and a full-bodied rosé.

During the tasting, you will learn much about the island’s wine production, a fascinating topic that will be discussed further at Santo Winery, your next stop. While you sample its wines, the vintner will explain the “kouloura” method of hand pruning, in which the vines are shaped into a spiral close to the ground to protect them from strong winds.

You will delve even deeper in Santorini’s methods of wine making in the tasting room at Domaine Sigalas. Its wines will be paired with local delicacies such as white eggplant, goat cheese and olives. Following the experience, you will return to Fira and ride the cable car back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes easy walking at times on uneven ground. There is also approx.20 steps to negotiate; it is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.

The stunningly gorgeous Island of Santorini has long been known as a romantic destination spot, but what about the wines made here? With more than a 5,000 year history of growing grapes, it shouldn’t come to any surprise that the island’s wines are both world-acclaimed and delicious.

  • Windmills & Amazing Akrotiri

Explore the landmarks of Santorini, including ancient ones that reveal what life was like 3,500 years ago when a volcanic eruption left a huge caldera in the island's center.

Arriving via tender from the ship, you'll board your awaiting coach and begin a picturesque drive south to the windmill ruins that have become such an icon of Santorini. During your brief stop for photos, enjoy the panoramic views to the sea and beyond.

In ancient times, Santorini was known as Strongyle, meaning "round," and was known for its high standard of living. That all ended in the middle of the second millennium BC, when a powerful volcanic eruption destroyed much of the island. For an insight into this ancient way of life, you'll drive to Akrotiri, a village that has been systematically excavated since 1967. Fortunately, the volcanic ash preserved many of the buildings and their priceless frescoes.

After walking around the more contemporary section of Akrotiri, you'll delve into its past at the primary archaeological site. You'll see commercial buildings lining the main street, once prominent two-story homes with colorful frescoes, and large earthen jars with traces of olive oil, fish and onion inside. It's a wonderful and mesmerizing glimpse into urban life here during the Minoan period.

Afterwards, you'll drive to the beautiful, whitewashed capital of Fira, which perches on the edge of a cliff overlooking the now-submerged volcano. After a short walk to the Metropolis Church, you may either remain in town to do some further exploring on your own, or take the cable car back to the tender pier.

Please note: This tour includes 2-hours of significant walking at Akrotiri, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion in Fira. Some of the walking is on inclines and may include uneven surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather-appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Volcano & Hot Springs

Disembark the vessel onto a local boat and sail to the lava islet of Nea Kameni. There you leave the boat and take an approximately 20-minute walk up an ascending unpaved path observing the lava fragments and volcanic rock formations as you approach the crater of the still-active volcano. Once you reach the top, there is the possibility of seeing steam coming out of the crater's walls. You'll have time to relax, enjoy the view and take lots of photos.

After the descent back down the crater, you will reboard the caique to leave the volcanic island and sail towards the thermal springs at Palea Kameni. For about 20 minutes the boat's anchor will dip into the green sulfuric waters and you will have the chance to swim in the warm waters of the thermal spring. From the spring you will sail to the port of Skala, where you will have access to returning to the ship or the cable car to return to Fira, the picturesque capital town of the island built on the rim of the caldera wall. Here, you can enjoy time to enjoy the town at leisure time permitting upon completion of the tour.

Note: This tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair or those with mobility concerns. This tour is only recommended for guests in very good physical condition as the hike up the volcano is considered steep, challenging, and strenuous. Rubber-soled, closed-toe shoes are essential for this tour. This tour is weather dependent. Guests wishing to swim in the Hot Springs should wear a swimsuit under their clothes and bring a towel from the ship. • Wellness - Unique Wellness Experience in Santorini

Hike up a volcanic crater on a nearby island, enjoy a relaxing swim in its thermally heated waters just offshore and then enhance the experience with a yoga lesson.

After departing from the pier in a traditional wooden boat, you will soon arrive at the uninhabited island of Nea Kameni. The strikingly barren island lies within Santorini’s flooded caldera and the volcano at its center is considered active, although the most recent eruption in 1950 was small and uneventful.

The best view of the volcano is from its rim, which you will reach by ascending a gravel path. Along the way, you will be treated to outstanding views of Nea Kameni, which was formed during two eruptions in the early 1700s. Nearly a century later, another eruption united a neighboring island to Nea Kameni, slightly increasing its size.

The stark landscape is hauntingly beautiful, especially when seen up close. The guide will point out the different types of volcanic rocks and white pumice. The closer you get to the top, the higher the temperature and the more pronounced the smell of sulfur.

Later, you will have the opportunity to swim in the shallow, mineral-rich waters offshore, which are thermally heated. You can’t help but notice that the temperature rises as you swim closer to shore. Once you emerge, your skin may feel silkier from the minerals and the relaxing heat should put you in an excellent state of mind for the yoga lesson that follows on board.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 30 minutes of walking up the crater. Guests must be physically able to participate; it is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability.
