  • Panoramic Sorrento and Italian Riviera

According to Greek legend, it was at Sorrento where Ulysses heard the tempting song of the Sirens, and the city remains irresistible today. Your introduction to this sparkling gem begins with a guided walk around one of the bustling main squares, followed by an inlaid woodwork art demonstration. While decidedly Italian, Sorrento was originally a Greek village and its strategic seaside location on a high plateau is classically Greek. Sorrento's cliff-side setting affords fabulous views across the Bay of Naples, and more breathtaking sights lie ahead, as you proceed along the rugged coastline, dotted with olive groves and fragrant lemon and orange trees. With each twist and turn of the road, you will be treated to a new and awe-inspiring view of the Italian Riviera. In the Bay of Salerno, you will see three small rocky islands called "Li Galli," which were said to be the mythical home of the Sirens. Returning via the Cape of Sorrento, you will pass through several hilltop villages, where you can admire the imposing Mt. Vesuvius in the distance.

  • A Cruise to Capri

A short, but scenic cruise on a jetfoil across the Bay of Naples, followed by a motor coach ride, brings you to the lovely hilltop village of Anacapri on the chic Isle of Capri.

Here, you may choose to ride a chairlift up to Monte Solaro for a breathtaking view of the bay. As an alternative, you may join the guide for a tour of the famed Villa San Michele. This wonderful old house, surrounded by fragrant gardens, belonged to the Swedish doctor and author, Axel Munthe, who wrote a popular book about its history. The existing home was built on the ruins of a Roman emperor's villa. Now a museum, Villa San Michele is filled with collections of paintings, furniture and ancient Roman artifacts. During your free time at the villa, you might stroll the piazzetta, shop, or enjoy lunch.

Later, ride the funicular down to Marina Grande and board the jetfoil for the return trip.

  • Minturno Roman Theater and Villa Matilde Vineyard

See Minturno’s ancient Roman theater, where performances are still held, and then sample a selection of distinctive wines from the nearby Villa Matilde winery.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a meandering drive up the coast to Minturno, an ancient site first mentioned in Roman documents from 340 B.C. However, the town may be even hundreds of years older.

While here, you will see several impressive Roman structures, including archways, a forum and a theater for more than 4,500 people. The theater has been completely restored and performances are still held there in the summer.

The Emperor Tiberius is thought to have added Minturno’s aqueduct, which brought water from a mountain nearly seven miles away. Other highlights include well-preserved sections of the 5th-century Appian Way, the widest and largest road of its time.

Continuing on, you will soon arrive at Villa Matilde, one of the region’s premier wine producers. The wines are made using traditional methods in an eco-compatible way. Solar panels supply most of the winery’s electricity, water is recycled, the farm machinery is bio-diesel, and numerous trees have been planted to increase oxygen emission.

The wines are equally impressive. You may sample a crisp and complex Greco di Tufo, a deep-red Falerno del Massico that beautifully blends aglianico and piedirosso grapes, or a cherry-red Terre Cerase aperitif wine. The latter pairs particularly well with buffalo mozzarella, one of the accompaniments you can expect to be served. Following the tasting, you will return to the pier.

  • Anniversary Exclusive: Naples Exploring Above and Beyond

See Naples’ architectural landmarks and largest, most popular piazza before heading underground to explore a tunnel conceived as a royal escape route.

After walking from the pier, you will soon arrive at the imposing Castle Nuovo. While parts of it date to the 13th century, it is still known as the new castle to distinguish it from the famed Egg Castle, which began as a 1st-century Roman villa. Castle Nuovo’s five towers make it one of Naples’ most recognizable landmarks.

Then, it’s on to Piazza Plebiscito, the city’s largest and most vibrant pedestrian square. Four Bourbon royal residences overlook the piazza, including pink-hued Palazzo Reale, which now holds a 30-room museum. During free time, you might wander about piazza, browse the shops or simply relax while taking in the scenery.

As memorable as the sights are above the ground, Naples also features a stunning attraction below the surface—the Bourbon Tunnel. Begun in 1853 as an escape route for royalty, the cavernous tunnel was never finished and became part of an aqueduct system. As you will discover while in the depths of the tunnel, it was also used as an air raid shelter during World War II.

Returning to the surface, you will catch sight of the seaside Egg Castle while walking to a popular restaurant for lunch. It’s only natural that Pizza Margherita will be served, as it was supposedly invented in Naples to honor the visiting Queen Margherita of Savoy. After dining, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 3 hours of moderate walking/standing. It is not recommended for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.

  • Mastroberardino Wine Tasting

Sample a selection of wines produced by the 10th-generation vintner of the Mastroberardino family, who relies on traditional methods and often unexpected varieties of grapes.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a relaxing and immensely picturesque drive inland to Atripalda, which lies in the fertile Campania region. Because of the rich soil, agriculture drives the local economy with wine production being especially important.

One of Campania’s most respected wineries is Mastroberardino, named for the family that has been producing wine here since the late 18th century. Ten generations later, the family is still producing signature wines from their headquarters in Atripalda.

After an eye-opening tour of the estate and a glimpse into the family’s long history in viticulture, you will enjoy a wine tasting. The wines will be paired with delicacies such as Irpinia mozzarella, local cold cuts, freshly grilled vegetables and homemade bread.

The Mastroberardino wines are produced from six grape varieties that thrive throughout the region. The exact selections will be chosen upon your arrival, but you can expect at least one of them to feature Aglianico, the region’s most popular red grape variety. Fiano di Avellino is another grape variety that grows well in the region’s rugged hills and volcanic, clay soil.

Following the tasting at the Mastroberardino winery, you will return to the pier via a scenic route through the surrounding countryside.

  • Historic Herculaneum

Like Pompeii, the village of Herculaneum was destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. But there was a substantial difference. Pompeii was buried in hot volcanic ash that burned everything combustible. Herculaneum was covered by hot mud that serendipitously preserved the village and prevented looting through the centuries. A treasure-trove of amazing structures and artifacts was revealed during the difficult excavation, which started in the 18th century, long before the advent of the science of archaeology. During your guided tour, you might see ancient, upper-class villas overlooking the sea, original statuary, inlaid marble floors, intricate wall mosaics, and even carbonized wood that survived the horrific devastation. It's a rare chance to understand what life was like nearly 2,000 years ago. Afterward, on the return trip to Naples, you will stop briefly at a local craft center.
