  • Explore Historic Agüimes & Guayadeque

Venture south into the most historic region of Grand Canary, where you'll explore a medieval rural town and an area with abundant caves once lived in by the first settlers.

Your tour commences with a scenic drive south to lovely Agüimes, a meticulously preserved town that dates back to 1486. Walking through the narrow streets of its medieval Old Town, which are lined with colorful stucco homes, you'll revel in the timeless atmosphere. Still, the highlight is famed San Sebastian church, an architectural marvel that has been declared a National Monument of Art History. Although at one time in history the town suffered from economic isolation, today it is a thriving city with a growing economy and wide range of cultural and sports facilities.

Next, you'll make your way through an evergreen valley where the Guanches, the prehistoric inhabitants of Grand Canary, once lived in caves. Here, you'll stop for a visit at the Guayadeque Museum. Its unusual collection of locally excavated artifacts tells the fascinating story of Grand Canary's volcanic creation and its earliest settlers, who sometimes lived in underground hamlets.

Then, it's on to an unusual and unique church, the cave-like interior of which was hand-carved out of the hillside. In fact, there are so many caves around Guayadeque that they are just naturally integrated into the lifestyle and architecture. For instance, Tagoror, the restaurant where you'll have a traditional Canarian lunch, was once a small cave, until it was expanded over an 11-year period. Let you mind wander and imagine what it like having a meal here during the time of the Guanches.

Following lunch, you'll re-board your coach for the scenic hour long drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of moderate walking that covers approximately 1.5 miles. There are some narrow and cobblestone streets to negotiate as well as some inclines and steps. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not recommended for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Island Panorama

Concentrating on the picturesque northern region of Grand Canary, this excursion showcases the island's natural beauty, affluent suburbs and traditional towns.

Depart from the pier and begin driving south toward the exclusive residential area of Tafira, a suburb of Las Palmas. Along the way, you'll see a number of magnificent estates with spacious verandas and multi-tiered gardens that flourish in the mild climate. Another spectacular view awaits you during a photo stop at the rim of nearby Bandama Crater, an ancient caldera layered with volcanic ash of different hues and dotted with indigenous vegetation.

Ascending even higher and deeper into Grand Canary's interior, you'll arrive in the village of Teror. Built on a plateau almost 1,900 feet above sea level, Teror is known for its colonial architecture, which lends the neat, gently sloping avenues an irrepressible charm. Still, the village's dominant feature is its 18th-century Our Lady of the Pines basilica, a pilgrimage site that according to legend was built after shepherds saw the Virgin Mary atop a nearby pine tree.

Next, you'll visit Arucas, an agricultural center that's become the island's third largest city. Enjoy an outside view of its iconic Cathedral, which boasts the island's highest tower. The tower took six decades to build, using dark lava stone which stands in stark contrast to the surrounding white houses. Just outside of town, you'll stop at the Altavista lookout to take in the panoramic views. Looking north, you'll see Las Palmas in the distance, where you'll soon arrive back at the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of easy to moderate walking and includes some inclines and steps to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the transportation and have an able-bodied companion to assist but should take note of the inclines and steps included in the tour. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please also be advised that this tour travels over winding roads and climbs to an altitude of up to 3500 ft. above sea level. The only available restroom facilities are very basic public toilets in the village of Teror.

  • The Flavors of Grand Canary

Sample many of the uniquely flavored products made in the agriculturally rich northern region of Grand Canary, including the island's finest wines and cheeses.

Traveling by minivan from the pier, you'll begin with a leisurely drive south toward Telde, the island's second largest city. Your first stop is Finca Aloe Vera, a rural farm that grows the medicinal plant aloe vera, the gel of which is used to heal small cuts, burns and skin irritations. It's also used as an ingredient in drinks and recipes. The climate of Grand Canary is ideal for growing the succulent without additives, which preserves the aloe vera in its purest, most desirable form.

Your second stop, will be Agüimes village, famous for its olives and locally produced bread which you can sample during our visit there. Driving farther inland, you'll then pass through the spectacularly beautiful San Roque Valley on the way to the village of Valsequillo. Agriculture has long fueled its economy, especially crops such as almonds, strawberries and potatoes. During a stop here, you'll have the chance to sample many of these Canarian staples and locally made cheeses and marmalades, which are particularly revered for their distinct flavors.

Continuing on, you'll drive to a nearby wine cellar located along the island's wine route. Here, you'll taste several of Grand Canary's finest vintages, produced from several varieties of grapes that flourish in the island's northern microclimate. Afterwards, you'll return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of moderate walking/standing over mostly flat surfaces. Due to vehicle space limitations, the tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests must be at least 21 years of age to participate in the wine-tasting. Please also be advised that this tour travels over winding roads.

  • Discover the Dramatic North Coast

Experience life on Grand Canary's rugged north shore by visiting scenic coastal villages and two plantations nestled in the lush Agaete Valley.

Starting off from the pier, you'll begin by driving along a predominately coastal roadway that follows the craggy northern shore of Grand Canary. Scenic highlights along this route include steep cliffs plummeting to the sea, secluded coves and long stretches of volcanic black-sand beach. Villages tend to be rather secluded, as you'll see driving through quaint San Felipe. However, there are more populous areas such as Agaete, which lies at the end of steep ravine dotted with mango, orange and lemon trees. It's a beautiful setting that has long inspired artists and writers. During your visit here, you'll enjoy a walk through this small fishing village and if it's a clear day, you may catch sight of Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain, which towers above the neighboring island of Tenerife.

Continuing on, you'll travel into one of the greenest valleys of the island, "Valle de Agaete" where a wide variety of flowers, plants and trees grow, such as papayas, mangos, oranges, lemons, almonds, strelitzias flowers, palm trees, and many others. Here you will visit “Maipés de Agaete”, an open air archaeologist museum, located around an aboriginal burial area in a fantastic volcanic landscape called “malpaís”. Followin your visit, you'll head to your next destination, Finca de Laja, a delightful rural plantation that also has the unique distinction of being a European coffee plantation. After visiting the wine cellar and garden, you'll be treated to a traditional Canarian snack and sample some locally produced wine and coffee before driving back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of moderate to strenuous walking and includes some natural terrain, cobblestone surfaces, inclines and steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests must be at least 21 years of age to participate in the wine-tasting.

  • Palmitos Park Experience

See a collection of rare plants and animals at spectacular Palmitos Park, which is part zoo, part theme park, part botanical garden and entirely entertaining.

From the pier it's an hour's drive south to Palmitos Park, an unusual botanical and ornithological park full of exotic flora, birds, fish and mammals. You'll spend approximately two and a half hours at your leisure in this popular park, no doubt mesmerized by the exhibitions and shows, which feature some of the world's most entertaining and curious creatures.

You might see dolphins performing aerial acrobatics, freshwater caiman cruising through the lake, and colorful tropical fish clustered around the aquarium reef. Birdwatchers will love watching the cockatoos and parrots show off, especially the ones who can speak in different languages. Several species of birds of prey are also on hand swooping through the air as if hunting in the wild.

The land animals are just as entertaining. If it's feeding time for the giant, carnivorous Komodo Dragons, you may notice their highly sensitive forked tongues flicking in the air, which is how they pick up the scent of food. You might also spend time watching the agile orangutans on Primate Island, the meerkats poking out of their burrows, and the talapoins, the smallest members of the Old World monkeys, feeding on fruit.

Of course, don't miss the plant life. The park contains the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands and hundreds of species of cactus. At the conclusion of your visit, you'll rejoin your coach at the appointed time and location for the transfer back to the pier. Those who miss the transfer will be responsible for making their own way back to the ship at their own expense.

Please note: Walking on this tour is mainly at the guests' discretion and does include some narrow pathways, inclines and occasional steps to negotiate. The tour is not recommended for wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • The Gardens of Grand Canary

This delightful excursion through the island's finest botanical gardens and parks reveals the incredible diversity of flora on Grand Canary, much of it now extinct in the wild.

From the pier it's a short drive to Parque Doramas, a leafy downtown park named for King Doramas, the last leader of the native Guanche tribe, who valiantly fought the Spanish before they took control of the Canary Islands in the 15th century. Despite its urban location, the park is incredibly serene. Your visit here is at your leisure to discover the cascading waterfalls, exotic flora, and winding garden paths that are all part of the charm that makes the park seem like a world unto itself.

Next, it's on to Viera and Clavijo, the largest botanical garden in Spain. An hour of free time here gives you ample opportunity to explore its meticulously tended 27 acres of paradise which are divided into several themed gardens. Each garden is devoted to a certain type of plant such as cacti, ornamentals and flora indigenous to Grand Canary. Thousands of species are on display, at least 500 of them endemic to the island. Meandering through the collection of plants, many of them in bloom, is a wonderfully sensory experience.

Your last stop, the Garden of Marquesa de Arucas, is just as delightful. Although only open since 1985, the garden was started decades earlier around the 19th-century summer residence of the first marquis of Arucas. Again, your time here is at your leisure and some of the sights you will want to be sure to see are a 200-year-old dragon tree, majestic jacarandas and a seemingly endless variety of palms. Along with the wonderful flora and fauna found at the garden, it's also likely that you will see peacocks regally strutting about the gardens. Afterwards, you'll make the short transfer back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: Total time visiting the gardens is approximately 2-hours and walking is mainly at the guests' discretion and does include uneven surfaces, inclines and occasional steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
