Along with your Culinary Arts Kitchen Chef Instructor and a knowledgeable local expert, stroll the streets of Heraklion, stopping for tastings of pastries, breads, coffee and olive oil - each hand selected by our chefs for an authentic Cretan experience. Enjoy an unforgettable lunch at an all-Cretan restaurant with wines from the island.
Join your Chef Instructor at the Culinary Arts Kitchen for an overview of your tour and learn why Crete is credited as the birthplace of healthy Mediterranean cuisine. Far from a diet the Cretan cuisine celebrates ingredients and recipes that are savory, rich and bursting with seasonal flavor.
Travel by coach along the sea towards the culinary center of Crete: Heraklion. Your local guide and culinary expert will point out native herbs and acquaint you with island’s rich culinary heritage. Hundreds of herbs grow wild on Crete, many never leaving the island, and the mountain air carries the slightly fragrant scent of wild sage and thyme. It’s said that there are 30 olive trees for every resident of Crete, making extra virgin olive oil a topic of lively discussion on our tour.
Once in Heraklion, you’ll wander the Old City with your Chef Instructor and local guide, making stops along the way for tastings. Bakeries in Crete are famous for their rustic breads, and you’ll be able to taste this for yourself. You’ll also sample the famous ‘bougatsa’ pastry - a sweet creamy semolina custard wrapped inside a phyllo dough. Enjoy a coffee in one of the trendiest coffee spots in Heraklion. You’ll have some free time to explore this trendy neighborhood and its many hidden treasures.
After your free time, join the group for a short walk to Peskes. Housed in a charming stone building, this all-Cretan restaurant has gained the attention of global culinary icons for the authenticity of the menu and passion for showcasing the ancient ingredients, cooking methods and recipes the island. Working with your Chef Instructor from the Culinary Arts Kitchen, your meal has been especially designed for your group. Enhanced by wines from the island, this is an unforgettable and truly authentic Cretan luncheon. Enjoy the intimate size of your tour group and interact with your Chef and your local culinary expert over lunch for a truly memorable experience.
After lunch travel by coach back to the pier with a new understanding of the fundamentals of Cretan cuisine and an inspiration to try the healthy and hearty foods of the Mediterranean.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of moderate to strenuous walking/standing, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
