    DAY 1 – January 23, 2028

Upon disembarkation in Callao, you will be met by our local representatives and transferred to Lima Airport for a flight to Quito. Upon arrival at the airport, our representatives will assist you with the check-in process.

    The flight is not accompanied.

Located at the base of Volcan Pichincha, Quito is known for its mild climate, rich history, and well-preserved colonial architecture. Once home to the Quitu tribe, later part of the Inca Empire, and re-founded by the Spanish in 1534, Quito was also key in independence movements. At 9,300 feet, it is the world’s second-highest capital and became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

Arriving in Quito, you’ll go through immigration, collect your luggage, and meet our local representative, who will transfer you to Quito.

Here you will visit El Panecillo, the iconic hill rising at the southern end of the old town. See the statue of Quito’s “Winged Virgin”, visible from almost anywhere in the city, and enjoy the stunning view of colonial Quito.

Pass by the San Francisco Church, founded in the 16th century, and visit the Church of La Compañía, admiring its magnificent structure and the seven tons of gold covering its gleaming walls. Explore on foot the Plaza de la Independencia, flanked by the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, and Quito Cathedral. Take in the beautiful centuries-old buildings. With picturesque cobblestone streets, flower-adorned balconies, and a lifestyle that has barely changed over the centuries, the historic center is truly the soul of Quito.

An early dinner will be served at local restaurant and then you will transfer to your hotel for check in.

    DAY 2 – January 24, 2028

After breakfast, meet your guide and head to the “Mitad del Mundo”, a famous site built on the Equator, where you can stand in both hemispheres at the same time. Here, we will visit the Intiñan Ethnographic Museum, which showcases the history, customs, and way of life of Ecuador’s pre-Columbian indigenous peoples. The museum also offers interactive demonstrations about the region’s geography, magnetism, and natural sciences.

Continue to Mashpi Lodge, located on the western slope of the Andes. The journey offers a chance to discover the stunning Andean landscape, as you descend from 2,800 meters (9,186 ft) to 1,000 meters (3,281 ft) above sea level. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch.

Mashpi Lodge is truly a destination where nature meets luxury, a boutique hotel designed with plenty of windows to give guests a front-row seat to one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

Located on a scenic plateau in the heart of a biosphere reserve, Mashpi Lodge features breathtaking views of the surrounding rainforest and mountains and the unique ecosystems within them. Every detail, from its architectural grandeur to its sophisticated interiors, allows guests to be deeply immersed in the splendor of nature through its expansive, floor-to-ceiling windows.

Far more than just a five-star hotel in an exquisite location; the lodge also provides access to the Mashpi Reserve and a research station that is at the forefront of rainforest protection and education.

You will have the opportunity to join a variety of unforgettable tours including bird watching. More than 400 avian species have been catalogued in the reserve, 35 of which are not found anywhere else on Earth. You can also visit the hummingbird garden, the observation tower, life center, butterfly farm and interactive laboratory. Other options include a day or evening hike and a Sky Bike tour above the forest canopy.

After settling comfortably into your room, you will be welcomed by one of the lodge’s naturalists for an introductory talk on the cloud forest, its conservation, planned activities, and practical tips on what to wear and bring for excursions. This informative 30-minute presentation takes place in the library.

In the afternoon, gather in the lobby for an excursion to the Napa Trail. This scenic trail passes through regenerating forest as well as pristine areas, making it ideal for learning about ecological succession and the importance of conservation in the Chocó region. Toward the end of the trail, visitors encounter a distinctive iron palm forest (Iriartea deltoidea). This moderate two-hour hike is also excellent for birdwatching.

In the evening, guests may attend an educational lecture led by a resident naturalist or biologist. Topics include the secret wildlife of Mashpi, the Choco as a global biodiversity hotspot, and ongoing scientific research projects, offering a deeper understanding of this unique ecosystem.

Dinner will be served at the lodge.

    DAY 3 – January 25, 2028

After breakfast at the lodge, guests will participate in activities of their choosing.

The below represents a sample of the activities that you may wish to participate in.

Every experience at Mashpi is tailored to your interests and ability levels. When you arrive at the lodge, you will see a chart with all the available activities. Adjustments can be made at any time along the way, ensuring that you have the experience of a lifetime.

Early Bird Watching - Optional - Mashpi Lodge offers a haven to bird enthusiasts seeking to view the species that inhabit the beautiful Choco Bioregion, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Every morning starting at 6:00am, guests can go to the lodge rooftop terrace where freshly baked snacks and hot coffee, tea and chocolate are set out, along with spotting scopes and binoculars. As the day breaks, the air fills with the sounds of hundreds of birds, many of which are perched in the trees and vegetation in the immediate surroundings of the lodge, allowing guests to often see incredibly rare species without leaving the lodge. Duration is approximately 1 hour.

Morning – Sky Bike & Observation Tower - Departure on foot to the Sky Bike and Observation Tower (15-minute walk). Experience the forest canopy on the Sky Bike, followed by a visit to the 30-meter observation tower offering panoramic views of the cloud forest. Optional return hikes via the Oxibelis Trail or the more challenging Limones Trail to San Vicente Waterfall. Total duration: 2–4 hours. Refreshments and lunch at the lodge upon return.

Afternoon – Howler Monkeys Trail & Life Center - Guided walk along the Howler Monkeys Trail through primary forest to the Life Center. Learn about native flora, wildlife, and conservation efforts, and observe birds and small mammals from the viewing deck. Visit the butterfly exhibits and surrounding gardens.

Evening – Night hike - The forest is transformed completely during the night, the sounds and smells are intensified, and other senses are awakened. On this “night safari”, unlike others, guests find the beauty in the small details, the croaking of frogs or the hum of insects. And if you turn off your flashlight you can observe the sparkling of fireflies in the woods or listening to the flutter of bats and if you look carefully to the ground the faint glow of bioluminescent fungi (foxfire or fairy fire) surrounding you. When you turn on the lights again you can see the reflection of hundreds of tiny eyes of insects all around. As we continue our way you can hear the call of owls and night birds or the rustling of the branches above you when the kinkajous (Potos flavus), an arboreal mammal relative to the raccoons, open their road through the treetops, searching for ripe fruits. No doubt, this is an overwhelming experience. The excursion begins at 19:00 and takes about 45 min to an hour, and you will be back on time to enjoy a delicious dinner.

    DAY 4 – January 26, 2028

After breakfast at lodge, enjoy one last morning activity. At the scheduled time, depart and drive back to Quito Airport for a flight to Lima. On the way to the airport, there will be a stop for a delicious local lunch and coffee experience at Cafe Frajares.

After arriving at the airport and completing check-in and security screening, you will have access to the international departure VIP lounge.

Upon arrival in Lima, go through immigration, collect your luggage, and meet our local representative in the arrivals hall. You will then transfer to the Port of Callao to re-join the ship.

The average temperature in Quito in January ranges from a high of 67°F (19°C) to a low of 50°F (10°C).

Cloud Forest Weather - warm, humid conditions and the start of the rainy season, featuring high chances of daily showers interspersed with sunny periods. Temperatures typically range from a low of 18°C (64 °F) to a high 77°F (25°C). Expect occasional rain and mist, typical of the cloud forest, which enhances the greenery and creates beautiful, atmospheric landscapes. This is a great time to enjoy nature, waterfalls, and rich wildlife, especially birdwatching.

•Guests will be supplied with rubber boots. Please ensure you send us your size. The lodge also supplies walking poles, but you may want to bring your own.

    Local Currency:

Ecuador’s local currency is US Dollars. It's helpful to bring small denominations, as change can sometimes be an issue, especially for larger bills like $50 or $100. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas.

Credit cards are accepted in many places, but smaller establishments or rural areas may require cash.

    Electricity

Ecuador uses 110 volts, 60 cycle electricity, same as the US. Plugs are typically the 2-pronged flat type so US travelers will not typically need a converter or adapter. In case they are needed, hotels can usually provide adapters.

    Luggage information

The luggage allowance for all flights on this program is as follows:

One piece of luggage per person with no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and a carry-on bag of maximum 15 pounds (9 kg).

*Some hotels do not provide distilled water. While we can certainly request this for you, we cannot guarantee that it will be available. If received at least 95 days in advance, requests will be sent on the final manifest that our ground operators and hotels receive. We highly recommend packing your own supply, especially on programs that travel to more remote locations in order to avoid not having it. Please keep in mind the rule for liquids in carry-on bags. Many hotels will charge for distilled water. If there is a fee, this will be added to your hotel incidental account to be paid at check-out. Fees will vary from hotel to hotel.

After checking in at the hotel, enjoy lunch on-site. Located on the exclusive bay of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and directly facing Playa de Oro, Golden Bay Galápagos provides guests with views of local wildlife such as sea lions and frigatebirds, as well as noteworthy sunsets from its terraces.

Following lunch, depart for La Galapaguera, nestled in the scenic highlands of San Cristobal. DAY 2

Begin your day with a relaxed breakfast at the hotel before setting out on an unforgettable marine adventure. Cruise across turquoise waters to Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido), San Cristobal’s most striking natural icon. Rising dramatically from the sea like a sleeping lion, this towering volcanic formation sets the stage for one of the Galapagos’ most memorable experiences.

Slip into the crystal-clear water to snorkel alongside sea lions, graceful rays, and shimmering schools of tropical fish, all framed by soaring cliffs and other worldly underwater landscapes. With calm conditions and gentle currents, the experience is easy and enjoyable, allowing you to fully soak in the beauty of this unique ecosystem.

In the evening, meet our local representative in the hotel lobby and transfer to a local restaurant, where you’ll enjoy dinner and reflect on a day filled with extraordinary sights and encounters.

    DAY 3

Today, set out on a half-day land exploration of San Cristobal, discovering the stories, landscapes, and wildlife that define the Galapagos. The afternoon is left at leisure, giving you time to relax and explore at your own pace.

Begin at the Gianni Arismendy Interpretation Center, where engaging exhibits bring the Galapagos to life. Learn about the islands’ volcanic origins, remarkable biodiversity, and the vital conservation efforts that protect this fragile ecosystem. This thoughtful introduction deepens your understanding of the natural world you’re about to explore.

From here, follow an easy boardwalk to Cerro Tijeretas (Frigatebird Hill), a place where history and wildlife intertwine. Pause at the bust of Charles Darwin, marking his visit in 1835, before continuing into an area alive with activity. Watch Darwin’s finches, mockingbirds, marine iguanas, and sea lions in their natural habitat, while frigatebirds glide overhead. Climb the short staircase to the viewpoint for sweeping vistas across northern San Cristobal -taking in Wreck Bay, Lobos Islet, Punta Carola, and, on clear days, the dramatic outline of Kicker Rock rising from the sea.

Continue to the peaceful shores of Bahia Darwin, a calm and scenic bay framed by lush vegetation and turquoise waters. This tranquil setting invites quiet moments, whether kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, or simply observing wildlife. Sea lions rest along the rocks, marine iguanas warm themselves in the sun, and birdlife fills the air with movement and sound.

    DAY 1 – January 23, 2028

Upon disembarkation in Guayaquil, you will be met by our local representatives and transferred to the airport for a flight to Quito.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and then meet your guide. This morning, you will drive north from Quito through scenic mountain landscapes to Quitsato, which comes from the Tsafiqui language of the Tsáchila people: quitsa means “middle” and to means “world,” referring to the Middle of the World.

Quitsato is a solar museum and cultural site in Ecuador, located exactly on the Equator near Cayambe. It is famous for its giant solar clock, which uses the Sun’s shadow to indicate time, solstices, and equinoxes. The site offers an interactive experience teaching astronomy, geography, and ancient indigenous knowledge.

Next, you will visit Hacienda La Compañia in the Cayambe area, a former Jesuit estate renowned for its stunning rose plantations. Learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and shipping of Ecuadorian roses, and explore the estate’s historic 1919 home and 16th-century chapel. The visit concludes with a delicious homemade lunch at the hacienda.

Afterwards you will arrive at Hacienda Cusin, over 400 years old, a historic Andean estate showcasing traditional architecture and colonial heritage. You will be welcomed by the friendly staff who will assist with check-in, and you can enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure in the Hacienda and its beautiful gardens. Dinner will be served at the Hacienda.

    DAY 3 – January 25, 2028

After breakfast, your day begins with a visit to Otavalo, a small town of around 130,000 people, famous for its warm, welcoming community and its world-renowned market, which has been active since pre-Incan times. The Otavaleños are among the most prosperous indigenous groups in Ecuador, largely thanks to their highly sought-after textiles, carpets, colorful ponchos, traditional jewelry, and intricate needlework.

Explore the Plaza del Poncho, the heart of the textile market, bursting with color and local craftsmanship. Observe the traditional dress worn by market vendors, which reflects the evolution of Andean garments while preserving cultural identity. Also, visit the local produce market, where you can discover a variety of Ecuador’s unique fruits and vegetables.

Next, head to the charming village of Peguche, home to a family workshop that produces traditional Andean musical instruments. Learn how to craft a pan-flute and enjoy beautiful highland music performed by the family. Guests can even try playing the instruments themselves, a fun challenge!

Finally, visit the Arte Nayia Gallery, run by a local family specializing in handcrafted dreamcatchers. Here, guests can learn about the tradition behind these creations and even make their own unique piece to take home, embedding their personal wishes and hopes for the future while spending time with the family.

After lunch at local restaurant transfer to Cuicocha, a crater lake located in the Ecuadorian Andes, within the Cotacachi-Cayapas Biosphere Reserve. It was formed by an eruption of the Cotacachi volcano and features emerald-colored waters surrounded by steep cliffs. In the center of the lake are small volcanic islands. It is an ideal spot for hiking, boat rides, and birdwatching. A short walk along the trail will allow you to enjoy the scenery and take photos.

After this visit, return to Hacienda Cusin where dinner will be served at the Hacienda’s restaurant. Afterward, enjoy a torchlight tour, a nighttime walk around the estate, concluding with a bonfire and a hot drink.

    DAY 4 – January 26, 2028

After breakfast and check out take part in a fun hands-on cooking class where you will learn to make traditional Peruvian “empanadas de Viento” (a typical cheese empanada).

Enjoy your empanadas and lunch before proceeding to the airport for a flight to Lima. After arriving at the airport, checking in and passing through security screening, you will have access to the international departure VIP lounge prior to your flight.

Upon arrival in Lima, go through immigration, collect your luggage, and meet our local representative in the arrivals hall. In time, head to the Port of Lima where you will re-board the ship.
